Air conditioning replacement in Portland

Compare complete replacement proposals, not just equipment prices. Ask how the system will be matched to the home and who handles any required permits and inspections.

Begin with the comfort problem

Replacing an existing AC should address a documented need. Describe recurring repairs, a system that cannot keep rooms comfortable or a replacement recommendation from a diagnostic visit. Ask whether the proposal addresses the cause of the discomfort. An equipment change alone does not automatically correct duct distribution, air leakage or a control problem.

Compare the complete system scope

Ask for the proposed indoor and outdoor model numbers and an explanation of their compatibility. The written scope should identify equipment, controls, refrigerant-related work, disposal, labor and any related electrical or duct work. Clarify what is reused and why. This site does not offer a new-construction installation service or promise eligibility for heat pumps or ductless mini-splits.

Confirm the permit authority for the address

Replacement equipment can involve mechanical permits and inspection. Give the contractor the full physical address, ask which city or county handles that parcel, and clarify who obtains approval and documents equipment compatibility. A Portland mailing address does not establish city jurisdiction. Oregon contractor licensing can be checked through the Construction Contractors Board before agreeing to work.

Sizing deserves an explanation

Ask how the proposed capacity was selected for the home, rather than assuming the size of the old unit is automatically correct. Room layout, building conditions and distribution can affect the choice. Request an explanation of the assessment and any assumptions. This website cannot size a system remotely and publishes no capacity recommendation from square footage alone.

Read price, warranty and schedule together

Compare the same scope across written proposals. Check equipment and labor warranty terms, excluded work, permit responsibilities, removal and any follow-up visit. Ask how an unexpected electrical, duct or access issue would be priced and approved. No local replacement-price average, savings percentage, rebate eligibility or installation date is guaranteed here.

Prepare your replacement questions

Have the existing equipment information if already available, recent repair findings and a room-by-room description of comfort issues. Identify the owner or association who can authorize the work. Call to confirm exact-address availability and ask what is included in the assessment before arranging an appointment.
